Red Layer Dough
  • 1.5 cups oat flour
  • 0.25 cup finely shredded carrot patted dry
  • 0.25 cup natural peanut butter xylitol-free
  • 3 tbsp unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 tbsp dried cranberries finely chopped & soaked
  • 1 tbsp water or broth low-sodium, as needed
  • 1 large egg

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Baking sheet
  • Wire rack
  • Candy cane cookie cutter (optional)

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Make Base Dough: In a bowl, mix oat flour and carrot. In another, whisk peanut butter, applesauce, and egg. Combine wet and dry, adding water until a firm dough forms.
  3. Make Red Dough: Mix oat flour and carrot. Mash soaked cranberries, then whisk with peanut butter, applesauce, and egg. Combine with dry mix, adding water for a firm dough.
  4. Form Stripes: Roll small pieces of each dough into thin ropes. Press a rope of each color together, twist 2-3 times, and form into a candy cane hook.
  5. Place shaped biscuits on baking sheets. Bake for 18-22 minutes until firm and lightly golden.
  6. Cool on sheet for 10 mins, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before serving to your dog.
