Method
- Whisk sugar, cornstarch, and salt in a saucepan. Slowly add milk and cook over medium heat until thickened.
- Temper egg yolks with hot milk mixture, then return to saucepan and cook until smooth.
- Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla extract.
- Layer vanilla wafers, bananas, and warm custard in a serving dish.
- Whip heavy cream with powdered sugar and spread over pudding.
- Chill at least 2 hours before serving.
