Ingredients
  

Cookie Dough
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 0.5 tsp baking soda
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 0.75 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg large
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp red food coloring
  • 0.5 cup buttermilk
Coating
  • 1 cup powdered sugar

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg, vanilla, and red food coloring; mix well.
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients, alternating with buttermilk, until a soft dough forms.
  5. Roll dough into 1-inch balls and place on baking sheets 2 inches apart.
  6. Bake 12–14 minutes until set but still soft. Cool slightly.
  7. Roll cookies in powdered sugar while warm, then again after cooling completely.
  8. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container up to 5 days.

Notes

Optional: Add festive sprinkles while rolling in powdered sugar.
